The University for International Cooperation (UCI) was founded in Costa Rica in 1994, as a response to the need of the Latin American and Caribbean region for professionals with intermultidisciplinary training to effectively face the multifaceted challenges and dilemmas of the complexity of the modern world, under the concepts of sustainability, regeneration, conservation and globalization.

From sustainability to regeneration
In response to this challenge, the University for International Cooperation (UCI) was founded in Costa Rica in 1994, with the objective of training professionals capable of dealing with effectively meet the multifaceted challenges and dilemmas of the complexity of the modern world, under the concepts of sustainability and globalization. Since its inception, UCI has been a pioneer:
- Transdisciplinary programs when they were not yet common
- Integration of environment, society and economy, then extended to culture, politics and spirituality.
- Distance education since 1996 and virtual education since the early 2000s, anticipating a transformation in the educational field.
But the world changed and at the ICU we recognized an uncomfortable reality: sustainable development was no longer enough.
